Privacy Counsel

Wood is currently recruiting a Privacy Counsel to be part of the Privacy team which sits within Legal, Ethics and Compliance. The roleholder will support the Group Data Protection Officer, team members and the wider business to manage privacy risks and realise Wood’s data privacy and protection strategy.  As part of the Privacy Team you will be a part of a team working to achieve a global privacy culture where data privacy compliance is recognised and embedded. This role can be based in any Wood office throughout the UK, home based or hybrid working for the right candidate. 

Key Responsibilities

• Provide stakeholders with practical, timely legal advice in relation to data privacy and protection for all business and functional activities
• Draft, advise on and negotiate privacy related clauses and agreements in client, supplier and other business contracts
• Advise on complex issues arising out of Individual Rights and Subject Access Requests
• Support DPO in relation to data incidents including incident analysis, investigations and writing reports and carry out data incident investigations and reports
• Support DPO in audit and assurance exercises in respect of the privacy programme
• Monitor new privacy developments globally and provide updates and guidance to DPO and key stakeholders
• Assist with new privacy law implementations and updates globally
• Review Data Protection Impact Assessments and progress actions to finalise document for DPO approval
• Update and amend privacy precedents according to changes in law and company approach and learnings
• Assist in the maintenance of and drafting updates to privacy policies, procedures and governance documents and complete reviews and amendments to privacy related policies and governance documents owned by other business functions
• Assist with privacy training and communications initiatives and presentations, including collaboration with other functions and the business units
• Work closely with Information, Digital and Technology team, specifically on security, governance, risk and compliance
• Engage with and help maintain the Wood Data Protection Ambassador network with updates and training.
• Instruction and management of external lawyers and consultants to advise on specific data protection issues.

• Educated to degree level (a law degree or other law qualification would be highly advantageous)

Knowledge, skills and experience:

• Knowledge of data privacy laws including the Data Protection Act 2018 and General Data Protection Regulation
• Familiarity with OneTrust privacy systems (or similar systems) - advantageous
• Strong legal research and analytical skills
• Excellent writing and drafting skills, with the ability to persuade and influence
• Ability to communicate complex ideas in simple straightforward ways
