Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently recruiting for a Senior Design Engineer with extensive experience in special purpose machinery.  To provide cost effective, accurate and professional mechanical designs for special purpose machinery at Wood PLC’s Systems Division.

To include but not limited to completing the following design engineering tasks:

 

  • Expert level in the use of 3D CAD – Solid Works
  • To maintain non-conformance in mechanical design to the minimum possible level
  • Implement standard design process, procedures and practices in line with the company group procedures
  • Bring to Wood design department cost effective machine design techniques and standards gained from previous experience
  • Mentor internal mechanical design engineers and apprentices
  • Have high level of understanding of the Machinery Directive, Risk Assessments and CE marking of machinery
  • Implementing drawing control and standards with emphasis on a standard parts and design methodology across the mechanical design function.
  • Detail design and geometric tolerancing of all component drawings
  • Have a good understanding of machinery controls concepts
  • Conduct FMEA and Risk Assessments for internal and external analysis
  • Generate FDS, DDS documentation as required
  • To generate innovative low risk concepts for sales inquiries utilising 3D CAD techniques and system descriptions to the highest level and assist in the selling process

Skills / Qualifications

  • Educated to HNC / Degree in Mechanical Engineering,
  • Extensive experience of working in a machinery design role.
  • 3D and 2D CAD
  • Solid Works
  • Experience of bare paper, ground up design from concept to delivery
  • Proficient in detail design, concepting and production of assembly drawings and build packs for workshop build
  • Have good mechanical materials knowledge
  • Be able to design to high precision with tight tolerancing
  • Expert knowledge of geometric tolerancing and application of same to build packs and machining drawings
  • High level of knowledge in the design of special purpose machinery from basic conveying equipment and complex precision tooling
  • Familiarity with up-to-date office software tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Design to cost as agreed and detailed in the project overview costings
  • Generate specifications for bought out parts
  • Value analysis and value engineering as an ongoing principle of the design process
  • Generation of technical manuals and recommending spare parts as required
  • Be capable of completing detail design calculations such as motor loading, inertias, CoG, motion
  • Knowledge of the different types and uses of robots
  • Familiar with modern manufacturing techniques and manufacturing costs
  • Have a good understanding of machinery controls concepts and how they may be integrated into the machine
